Black Square Crewel Cushion
Why we love
Crewel Embroidery is a fascinating needle art. Our gorgeous crewel cushion covers are handcrafted by skilled artisans in Kashmir and are supported by Indian National Trust for Art & Cultural Heritage (INTACH), an NGO dedicated to the conservation and promotion of Indian culture. The NGO works towards developing the skills of the artisan community, promoting the traditional crafts of the region and creating a sustainable and appropriate market and financial access linkages for rural Kashmiri communities.
Crewel embroidery was introduced hundreds of years ago by central asian invaders of Kashmir. Families of skilled artisans have since then developed this skill passed on from generations, and have been creating this beautiful fabric that has today become an integral part of decorative home textile across the world.
We love the thick, raised, dimensional feel to the work created by crewel wool which is thicker compared to silk or cotton embroidery threads and makes for the product's most striking feature.
