If you love stumbling upon that rare vintage find, then you will adore the story behind this scarf. Made by skilled women artisans in eastern India, this scarf is designed from two layers of vintage sari fabric handpicked for their stunning colours and designs and paired piece-by-piece to recycle them into something new and useful. It gets its name from the special ‘kantha’ stitch that creates a rich, rippling effect across the fabric and adds a unique texture to the scarves. This pure silk sari-scarf will be that statement accessory, however you choose to style it.

Each scarf has the name of the artisan embroidered in the corner in Bengali - a sweet reminder of its rich tradition and humble origins.

Why we love

In sanskrit, the word Kantha means Rags. For centuries, bengali women have taken their discarded cloth and sewn them together with a simple running stitch to create something new.

Made by House of Wandering Silk; a social enterprise in India; the stunning Kantha scarves are handmade from up-cycled, vintage saris in a mix of ikat weaves and floral, tribal and abstract prints. Each piece is unique and you will never see the same combination of fabrics and threads twice. The kantha used is of the highest quality, stitched by women whose families have been sewing kantha for generations in West Bengal, India.

The production processes do not involve any child labour and all the handwork is provided through a women's cooperative in West Bengal state, ensuring disadvantaged women have dignified, sustainable and fairly paid employment.
